Bhagavad Gita (17:9) Explanation on Food and Drink

“Foods That Are Too Bitter (coffee), Sour (vinegar), Salty (crisps) Hot (chilli), Pungent (garlic/onion), Dry (meat) and Burning (acid) Are Dear To Those In The Mode of Rajasi Gun (passion).  Such Foods Cause Distress, Misery and Disease”.

EXPLANATION

Food that is excessively tasty makes the body strong but the mind lazy.  It creates a heavy load on the body promoting inflammation and disease.  Food such as a salad tray with nuts and olives and milk will equally provide the same nutrients but will improve mood.  Give you health and a boost of energy.  Such food will not create a desire or passion or cravings for food therefore allowing you to keep the mind focused on remembering God.

Rajasic food will make the mind more agitated, wandering and focused on mundane things like lust, violence and hatred.

Although one may not want to eat Satvik food, such food will keep a person slim, youthful and bright minded having greater memory, focus and creativity.  The mood of a Satvik diet will be calm whereas the mood of Rajasi diet will be more aggressive and promoting the ignorance of mind lacking the ability to understand and have the correct view.
