Altaf Khalifa (Image: Leicestershire Police) A child rapist who fled the UK while on bail, leading to an international manhunt, has finally been jailed. Altaf Khalifa, who committed crimes against two girls - one of whom later took her own life - was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court today (Thursday, July 25). Much of the offending, which took place between January 2016 and August 2019, happened at an address in the Beaumont Leys area of Leicester, a Leicestershire Police spokesperson said. The girls were aged eight to 10 and 13 to 15 at the time of the crimes. The police investigation into Khalifa’s offending began in November 2019, when the crimes against the girls began to come to light. Khalifa, of no fixed address, was subsequently arrested, but denied that any offences had occurred and was released under investigation. Khalifa refused to tell police any of his passwords or the pin he used to unlock his mobile phone. However, in July 2021 Khalifa was taken back into custody after digital forensics experts were able to use specialist software to get around the encryption on his devices. An examination of his phone had revealed indecent images of children and extreme pornography, police said. It was at that time, while on bail, that Khalifa left the country, leading to an international manhunt. After two years on the run, he was tracked down to Malaga, in Spain, and extradited back to the UK. By that time, one of the girls had killed herself. She took her own life at the start of 2020, two months after telling medical professionals what had happened to her. Khalifa, 42, stood trial earlier this year, and was found guilty of 11 offences – eight of which were sexual offences against the two girls. Khalifa was found guilty of: One count of rape One count of rape of a child under 13 One count of sexual assault One count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity One count of sexual assault of a child under 13 Two counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration One count of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity One count of distributing or showing indecent photograph of a child One count of possessing an extreme photographic image One count of failing to comply with a requirement to disclose the key to protected information He was back in court today for sentencing, where he was given 24 years behind bars and placed on the sex offenders register for life. After the hearing, Detective Sergeant Kate Beel said: “All investigations involving the abuse of children are extremely challenging and upsetting, but this case has been particularly difficult following the devastating news that one of the victims had taken her own life. “Both girls showed immense bravery in coming forward and despite the extremely difficult situation the living victim and the families have remained engaged and supportive of the investigation. “For more than two years Khalifa tried to avoid being held accountable for the horrendous crimes he committed." 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
