Sikh-Brits Celebrate Royal Wedding in Southall StreetFest

by JESSICA EARNSHAW

A unique street party took place in Southall, England, to celebrate the area's special connection with the royal wedding.

Clarence Street was the home of Kate Middleton's grandparents and her mother also attended the local school, Featherstone High School.

The street came alive with almost 4000 residents coming out of their homes and celebrating to mark this special occasion in true Punjabi style.

Adults and children alike were dressed in traditional Sikh and Punjabi clothing and danced along the street.

The street party included Bollywood dancers, Asian drummers, bhangra music and Indian singers.

The Labour MP for Ealing Southall, Virendra Sharma, said: "It far exceeded my expectations. Every individual and organisation came together to make the event successful."

A traditional Punjabi wedding was staged and was at the centre of the proceedings with everyone getting behind the ‘royal' couple.

A procession made its way down the street with a groom on horseback meeting his bride wearing full traditional wedding garments.

The baraat followed comprising of the immediate family and friends of the "groom". Punjabi food was served to the crowd.
