BATALA: A middle aged woman was shot dead while two other persons were seriously injured, when a youth allegedly under the influence of liquor starting firing in a marriage palace, here at Fatehgarh Churrian on Friday evening.

According to the information available, during the marriage ceremony at Tajindra Palace, while dancing on the tune of drums, a youth started firing in the air. Unable to control his actions, he accidentally fired at the standing gathering in which Gurmeet Kaur resident of Ramdas was killed on the spot while two other persons, as Kuldip Singh, a resident of Bhalowali and Inderjit singh a resident of Mokhe village were seriously inured and were rushed to Guru Nanak Dev hospital, Amritsar.

Though the weapon used in the crime belongs to akali leader and Chairman of Dera Baba Nanak Block Samiti, Sucha Singh but the police has registered a case against Navtej Singh.

When contacted SHO, Fatehgarh Churrian, Inderjeet Singh, he denied the role of akali leader in the entire episode, and denied to give any information in this regard.

SSP, Batala, Gurdeep Singh, told that Navtej Singh, who was close friend of Sucha Singh’s son, took his double barrel gun and started firing and on the statement of gathering, the police has registered a case under section 304 IPC against Navtej Singh, who fled from the spot.

It is pertinent to mention here that Deputy Commissioner, Gurdaspur, Prithi Chand had strictly banned to carry weapons in the marriage palaces.
