MAHAL: An Indian origin Canadian woman and her relatives have been booked on charges of duping a man here on the pretext of taking him abroad, police said Sunday.

Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Bhandaal Bootan village near Nurmahal town in Jalandhar district, married Canadian citizen Ranjit Kaur in December 2007. Ranjit promised to assist Sarabjit in migrating to Canada after marriage, a police official said.

"It was a contract marriage and Ranjit's parents had assured my family members of taking me to Canada and to help in getting PR (permanent residence) there. We paid for the air tickets of Ranjit, her parents and brothers. Besides, we spent nearly Rs.10 lakh on the marriage and gave expensive gifts to Ranjit," Sarabjit said.

"In January 2008, Ranjit went top Canada and after few months stopped taking my calls. Now she is demanding $100,000 to initiate the proceedings of applying for PR for me."

On the basis of Sarabjit's complaint, police booked Ranjit, her two brothers and parents.

"We are looking into this case. Right now it is difficult to comment on our further action as investigation is still under process," the police official said.

Both families should have been booked for turning what is supposed to be sacramant into a business deal. Only in India can one chor get the police to book another chor for stealing from him!

Surely this must be illegal under western immigration laws.
